Pet Surgery

The most common injury in veterinary medicine is a torn cranial cruciate ligament, which is similar to a human ACL. We offer two different procedures to help correct this injury. The TPLO is the most common procedure. This involves cutting the tibia with a curved saw blade and shifting it slightly into a new position. It is then secured using a bone plate and screws. This movement of the bone takes the tension off the cruciate ligament and provides a great long-term outcome.  

The Lateral Fabellar Suture procedure is generally used for smaller dogs and involves a thick non-absorbable suture being placed from the back of the femur to a hole in the front of the tibia. This prevents forward movement of the tibia seen with a cruciate tear. This increased stability allows the knee to form scar tissue that will also help stabilize the joint.

We will do a thorough assessment for any possible fracture, including X-rays to determine the fracture's location and severity. Treatment options may include splints, casts or surgical intervention with pins, plates or screws to stabilize the bone. After the surgery or casting, we will closely monitor your pet during the healing process to ensure proper bone alignment and recovery. For optimal recovery, we may also recommend rehabilitation.

If your pet’s limb or body part is severely injured or diseased beyond repair, we may advise amputation. After the affected limb or tissue is carefully removed, we will close the wound using sutures or staples. Post-surgery, your pet will be monitored closely for pain management and for us to track the healing process to ensure the best recovery.

Femoral head and neck ostectomy (FHNO) is a surgical procedure performed to treat hip joint problems, such as severe arthritis or fractures. The surgery involves removing the femoral head and neck, which eliminates pain caused by the damaged joint. After anesthesia, we will carefully remove the affected portion of the femur, allowing the muscles to form a "false joint." Post-operative care includes pain management, rest, and rehabilitation to help your pet regain mobility.
